Satellite communications have traditionally been associated with a particular type of environment: remote, difficult to reach, and far beyond terrestrial infrastructure. At sea, in isolated regions, or during operations where local infrastructure cannot be relied upon, satcom is indispensable.
But the assets that need satellite connectivity do not necessarily spend all their time in those environments. A government vehicle can move from a city into a remote area. A logistics fleet can travel through strong cellular coverage before crossing hundreds of kilometres with very little. A critical asset might normally have excellent terrestrial connectivity, but still need to remain online when that infrastructure is unavailable.
Satcom does not need to be the default to be critical
Cellular remains extremely well suited to connected assets operating within terrestrial coverage. Multiple cellular networks can provide strong performance across much of an asset's journey, making it unnecessary to route everything through satellite simply because satcom is available.
The importance of satcom becomes clear at the edges of that infrastructure. When cellular networks become weak, congested or disappear entirely, satellite provides a connectivity path independent of local terrestrial coverage. This means that it is a necessary layer not only when a critical asset is on the move, but also when it is static and cannot go offline even when there is a temporary issue with the local cellular network.
For mobile and mission-critical applications, that additional path changes what is possible. The asset does not need to be permanently remote for satcom to be valuable. It simply needs to operate somewhere, at some point, where losing connectivity is not an acceptable option.
The missing layer is orchestration

The technology aggregates available connectivity and seamlessly switch traffic between cellular, satcom and other ip-based links. STEER® operates at ip packet level, allowing connectivity to adapt dynamically as network conditions change.
That means an asset travelling through strong cellular coverage can make use of terrestrial networks. As those networks degrade, traffic can be managed across the connectivity paths still available. When terrestrial connectivity can no longer provide what the application requires, satcom is there to maintain the connection.
The application does not need to make that decision. The connectivity layer does.

- Flexibility: organisations can introduce new connectivity capabilities without rebuilding the applications that depend on them.

As governments, defence organisations and industry increase their use of satcom, including sovereign and commercial capabilities, having access to more communications networks is only the beginning. Those networks also need to work together.
