In connectivity, satellite and terrestrial networks are still too often treated as an either-or decision. Cellular is the obvious choice where infrastructure exists. Satellite is brought in when operations become remote because, traditionally, “that’s the satellite use case.”

There are practical reasons for this. Running both can mean paying for two subscriptions and managing two different technologies, even though only one may be needed at a given moment. So, organisations choose the network they believe best fits the environment and suffer through its limitations.

Different technologies, different weaknesses

Cellular depends on infrastructure on the ground whereby coverage is affected by distance from towers, terrain, buildings and network availability. If the infrastructure serving an area fails or becomes unreachable, so does the connectivity it provides.

Satellite solves that problem differently. It can reach places where terrestrial infrastructure simply does not exist, but it brings different constraints. Capacity is shared, so performance can deteriorate when many users are concentrated within the same area. It can also be affected by obstructions, weather conditions, latency and visibility of the sky.

Neither technology is universally better. More importantly, their weaknesses do not always occur in the same place or at the same time.

So why choose one?

This is where the overlap becomes valuable. Strong cellular available? Use it. Moving beyond terrestrial coverage? Satellite becomes valuable. Local infrastructure goes down? There is another path available. Satellite capacity becomes constrained in a busy area while terrestrial connectivity remains strong? Make better use of the infrastructure on the ground.

For truly resilient connectivity, multi-technology connectivity is the answer. The objective is not to use satellite and cellular simultaneously simply because both are available. It is to make intelligent use of their respective strengths while accounting for where each technology performs less effectively.

And this should be done automatically, in the desired logic, without intervention.

Building the logic into the connectivity

That is how satellite becomes part of the telecom ecosystem on the ground, and how the infrastructure already available becomes considerably more resilient.
