You get on the bus, find a seat and spot the sign: “Wi-Fi on board.” Perfect, before you reach your stop you can quickly send some emails, check the news, and reply to messages. You connect, open a webpage and watch it load. And load.

Eventually it appears, just as the connection drops again. Five minutes and several refreshes later, you give up. Somehow, the promise of Wi-Fi has made the journey more frustrating than having no Wi-Fi at all.

The problem: a connected journey that keeps disconnecting

Passengers increasingly expect to stay connected while travelling. They answer emails, message friends, check their next connection or simply want to scroll during a 40-minute commute. Yet buses and trains constantly move between areas served differently by cellular networks.

One operator may perform brilliantly in the city centre but struggle further along the route. Another might have strong coverage exactly where the first becomes weak. Add congestion at busy stations or events, and even areas with normally good coverage can suddenly become problematic.

For passengers, none of that matters. They do not care which cellular network is available outside the window. They care that the Wi-Fi sign above their head promised internet, and the internet does not work. That frustration can quickly become part of the perception of the journey itself. A bus can be clean, punctual and comfortable, but if a passenger spends the journey repeatedly refreshing a page, reconnecting to Wi-Fi or losing a call, their experience is still disrupted.

The problem goes further than passenger Wi-Fi

The passenger experience is the most visible consequence, but it is not the only one. Modern public transport also carries a growing number of connected systems, from ticketing and passenger information to vehicle telemetry, location data and other IoT devices.

When connectivity becomes unreliable, these systems can also lose their ability to communicate consistently. So, while passengers experience the problem as an annoying loading screen, operators can face a much wider connectivity challenge behind the scenes.

The solution can be simpler than you think

Solving this does not necessarily mean adding every connectivity technology available to every bus.

Satellite combined with cellular can provide another level of resilience and peace of mind, particularly for routes travelling through extremely challenging coverage areas. But for many public transport applications, the first step can be much simpler: stop relying on a single cellular network.

The future does not necessarily require putting the most complicated connectivity setup onto every vehicle. It requires understanding the actual connectivity problem and removing unnecessary dependence on individual networks.

Sometimes that means combining terrestrial and satellite connectivity for maximum resilience. Sometimes, access to 550+ cellular networks is enough to make the problem practically invisible.

For the passenger staring at a loading screen, that invisibility is exactly the point.
